Aphex Twin – Come To Daddy (Video)

on March 27th, 2009 by Ian

Now I’ll readily admit that Aphex Twin is not everyone’s cup of tea – I love some of the stuff the guy churned out but some I just didn’t get. But as far as music videos go, then there area handful that have become embedded in my brain down the years and the video of “Come To Daddy” below is one of them.

It’s probably the darkest, most disturbing “mainstream” pop video I’ve ever seen but fascinating and totally brilliant. If you’ve never seen it, then here’s your chance:

PRS And Youtube In Standoff

on March 10th, 2009 by Ian

Interesting story on the BBC today about Youtube pulling all UK music videos from the site in a reaction to the charges being levied by PRS (Performing Rights Society). Now music licencing is a complicated beast but essentially there are “Master rights” and “Publishing rights”, usually held by a record label and a publisher respectively, and both need to be licenced to play or sell music to the consumer. Roughly speaking, PRS handle licensing for UK companies when it comes to visual stuff, while sister company the MCPS handle audio rights.

The problem the music industry has is that too many people want their cut. You have the writer, performer(s), manager, record label, publisher, promoter, distributor and then the licensing organisations all looking to benefit from Read the rest of this entry »

Golf Diary – March 2009

on March 9th, 2009 by Ian

Well February was a washout. Not in the literal sense so much, more to do with the fact that those I know who play golf are clearly all too scared to play me. Now I’m not sure if that’s because of my golf, or other factors, but the number of “injury” and “stock take” excuses that were forthcoming made me suspicious.

Monday 23rd March, 2009

A black day! Another 9 holes at Boars Head as a “warm up” for the trip to Spain in late April, but this time Ads got the better of me, 2&1. Shocking. Short of a birdie and a par, there was nothing of note all round so arguably I deserved to lose. Ads even played the wrong ball on the 4th hole, which I fully intended to use against him if the match was tight at the end. That was, until I went and played his ball on the 7th! D’oh!

I should have known really – I played the wayward drive without checking which was just plain stupid as 9 times out of 10 it’s Ads who hits it so far out to the left you have to cross at least 2 fairways to reach it. Bu alas I didn’t check and thus my gameplan became flawed.

A nice bit of wind out there today but at least it didn’t rain. Good practice for the Links courses we are playing in Spain but fair to say I didn’t handle it particularly well. Next time Ads…!

But finally, Ads came through and decided he could fit 9 in at Boars Head today (Monday 9th) so we trotted out at 9:40am behind Read the rest of this entry »

Slumdog Millionaire. Wow!

on March 8th, 2009 by Ian

Brilliant. I can totally see why this won all the awards: a thoroughly entertaining and genuinely moving film which managed to combine an excellent storyline with harsh realities and bring some real perspective into your life. Essentially, it’s a clever story that interweaves the “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” theme in with the real life of a Mumbai slums resident.

As usual, I managed to avoid reading the synopses provided in the gazillion other reviews of this film on the web, so it came as a bit of a surprise to learn it wasn’t about cheating at all, which I’d assumed. I’m not going to add spoilers to this review, even though I was probably about the last person in England to see it!

It was genuinely shocking at times when you think that the sort of life that is portrayed is reality for millions or people. Anyone that’s seen it will agree I’m sure. A good point to say that if you saw it and want to make a difference to someone’s life, then go to GiveIndia and donate something.

There’s been lots of comments about how this film portrays India in a bad light, even from Read the rest of this entry »
