I had a frustrating problem recently where my PC would sometimes not respond to mouse clicks or keyboard strokes and I had to keep clicking or pressing keys before it would accept them. I’m running Windows XP and this started happening soon after I installed Google Chrome.
After some investigation, it turns out a task called “Google Update” was causing the problem. It starts up with Windows and gets installed with Chrome. I want to keep Chrome for development purposes but to lose the updater so here is the fix if you have a similar problem:
1) CTRL+ALT+DELETE to get the Windows Task manager up.
2) Remove the task “Google Update”
3) START / Run / and type in “Regedit” to editthe Registry
4) Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERS / Software / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Run / Google and delete the key “Google Update”
5) Reboot
That will stop it running at Windows Startup, but if you want to remove Google Update altogether, open Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Update\ and delete the executable.
