Those who know me know I used to have a passion for the band Orchestral Manouevres In The Dark (aka OMD). I used to collect records, CDs and stuff by the band and still to this day have a huge collection of special editions, promos, test pressings, imports and unusual items. Actually I have considered breaking it up on several occasions but for whatever reason decided not to. Can’t play the vinyl anymore though
Anyway, after a few years in the wilderness doing other stuff, it appears Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys, the two founder members, are back together and out on tour. In fact they went out last year and did their “Architecture & Morality” album live with a string of hits at the back end of the show. I just bought the 2007 tour DVD (see pic) as I missed the tour itself and it was very impressive. I say “missed” the tour – actually it was a conscious decision on the basis that I’m not a great believer in old bands doing comebacks…it’s never quite the same IMO. And while it wasn’t quite the same this time round, having seen the DVD I wish I’d gone.
So this time out it’s a bit more for the hardcore. They’re still doing the hits, but the first part of the show is their “Dazzle Ships” album – an experimental offering that personally I loved, but tanked at the time as it was just too experimental for most people. You know – bleeping radios, electronic sounds and sampled broadcasts mixed in with synths and a few vocals. Odd, but as I say, I thought it was very good.
Here’s one of the tracks, “ABC Auto Industry” from the album with a video from way back in the 80’s, just to give you a flavour of the oddity that Dazzle Ships is.
